Design, when applied with intension, can frame an identity.

For the past 32 years, I’ve worked as a Graphic Designer & Art Director for ad agencies, in-house and client direct. My expertise lies in digital and print design. I’m a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, with a skill set that ranges from conceptual thinking to creating highly-crafted designs.

Education

Graduated in 1992 from The La Jolla Academy of Advertising Arts. The focus of study was on the fundamentals of design and how to apply concepts to support the brand and identity of a company. I learned traditional methods of comping, production and the printing process. At that time computers were just being widely adopted by the print industry. Luckily I had a jump on the technology as I had experience with apple computers.

How I got started

In early 1992 I moved to Greece and landed a job at Hellenic Traveling. There I did design and production of a travel book that provided the travel industry with all of the flight and ferry schedules for Greece. 

Within a year I was recruited by an Ad Agency called Artline. There I designed and produced print advertising for Hasbro, Milton Bradley, Playskool and retail toy stores. Artline was purchased by Olympic DDB shortly after I started and I was one of two people that they kept on from the agency. 

At Olympic DDB I worked directly with the Senior Art Director and Creative Director on projects for their biggest clients. Volkswagen, Jack Daniel’s, Alpha Bank, Omega and Schweppes were some of the more notable clients.

 

 

Back home

I returned to the U.S. in 1995 and went to work for TMP Worldwide. There I advanced my skills working on projects for Toyota, Coca-Cola, and Monster Jobs.

After TMP I went to Auto Parts Club to run their in-house art department. There I managed a 5 person team that produced advertising and collateral for APC’s 12 big-box auto parts stores.

Kenneth C Smith Advertising was my next employer. There I had the good fortune to work with a highly talented creative team that produced work for Sharp Healthcare, University of Phoenix, Mail Boxes Etc. and Daewoo Motor America.

After KSA closed its doors, I worked for Brookfield Residential as their Creative Web Director. There I worked as a member of the IT department managing and maintaining their website. The marketing department frequently called upon me to create animated banner ads as well as collateral for the community sales offices.

In 2005 I went out on my own and started freelancing. My agency clients have assigned me projects for Microsoft, Verizon, Cisco, 23andMe, Ancestry, Adobe, PG&E, Electronic Arts, Humana, Sprint and Symantec.

More recently

In 2018 I launched OB Bizmap. It combined a paper map of Ocean Beach, San Diego with a treasure hunt web app. The web app combined google’s Street View with their Geolocation API to create an augmented reality game similar to Pokemon GO. The use of QR codes without a QR code reader app, pre-dated the standard reader function in all current mobile operating systems. Then SARS-CoV-2 happened.

After the pause, I rebooted my work as a freelancer. WordPress websites, random print projects, social media and an occasional video production are what I find myself occupied with currently.

My love for what I do and how every project presents an opportunity for me to contribute, shows in the quality of my work. Creating marketing materials that support a brand is my wheelhouse.
